So much better Late than Never 2016

When my husband Ed and I graduated from college in 1971, our plans were to move to Alaska to live, work and play. Due to my father-in-law's tragic death 2 months after we wed, we postponed the trip. Life happens and so here we are, newly retired and leaving June 16th for Alaska through Great Falls, Montana. We plan on traveling through Banff and Jasper and then use the Milepost's basic itinerary #2. Visiting with people along the way is one of our primary ways of learning about an area so our route may vary from time to time.

We plan to travel up the west coast of the USA, the western access route through Canada, the Alaska Highway, over to Anchorage and Soldotna for salmon fishing and return through Jasper, Banff and Yellowstone National Parks. FL/GA Vagabonds + Six 2016

We are two retired Navy couples traveling in two RV's accompanied by 6 dogs. After a year of anticipation and planning, we left the south on May 12 and will travel to Alaska and back between now and September 30, 2016. Steve and Sarah (the blogger) Colt from Orange Park, FL travel with Corky, a Chesapeake Bay retriever and Precious, a one-eyed shih-tsu. David and Jackie Weis from Kingsland, GA are accompanied by their 4 dachshunds, Beans, Maggie, Peso, and Patches. Our travels so far have taken us to Hershey, PA, Niagara Falls, NY, across Ontario to Detroit and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota, and to Glacier National Park. Crossing into Canada, we will stop at Banff, and Lake Louise before picking up the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek. We plan to see as much of Canada and Alaska as possible before heading back to the USA through Washington state. We will then turn east, and stop for a S.M.A.R.T. (Special Military and Recreational Travelers) National Rally at Amana, IA before we head for home at the end of September.

Sunbird 2016

This is my third round trip driving to/from Alaska since 2013. A permanent resident of Arizona who doesn't care for the heat of summer, I have spent 3 months of the past four years in Anchorage, a city I lived in for several years in the 80's. I drove north in 2013 in my motor home with a friend then back home alone, and have made two trips with friends in my suv this year and last. Currently back in Alaska, I made the northbound trip this year with one of my dear friends and former college roommate, Kathy, and my 10 year old Boston Terrier, Charlie. I try to vary the route each time and am busy now thinking about the route for my trip back to Arizona. Kathy and I had a most enjoyable trip this year that even included a couple of days in Nelson, British Columbia visiting friends. Our total travel time was only 8 days, but we packed in a lot of sightseeing and fun in that short trip. I strongly encourage anyone who has limited time to still consider a driving trip to Alaska. You will want to come back and see and do more the next time, but it gives a good perspective on the wonderful sights of Canada and Alaska that can be enjoyed even on a tight schedule.

Spontaneous Alaska 2015

A Brit world traveler and a Hoosier from Indianapolis take on a four month truck camper expedition to Alaska through the western Canadian provinces and territories. I am a 67 year old retired college professor / consultant from Indianapolis; Winston "The Beard" Wolfrider is a 32 year old accomplished world traveler, artist and writer from Bristol, England. We are two of the most incredibly different people you can imagine. In the Spring of 2014 we met as The Wolfrider was hitchhiking across the U.S. on $6 a day, raising money for the World Land Trust (he was honored in November as one of their top fundraisers). It was a serendipitous encounter that turned into an awesome 6,000 mile, four week travel adventure in 11 western states and one province in my truck camper. Now, in June 2015 we are getting together again on a four month adventure to Alaska via the Alaska Highway. It will be an unplanned adventure. We intend to experience as much of Alaska as we can spontaneously as the land and people present themselves to us. Our only desire is to drive the Alaska Highway, take the Dalton Highway to Deadhorse (where we hope to dip our toes in the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay), and return in September on the Alaska Marine Highway to Bellingham, Washington, winding up in Portland, Oregon.

The Hansen family 2012

We are a family of 5 leaving Virginia to establish our home in Homer, Alaska. After a combined 70 year career supporting the Department of Defense (DoD) we have decided to leave the craziness of DC for the peace of Alaska. This plan was set in motion several years ago when we fell in love with Alaska, bought some property, sold our home in Virginia, retired from the military and DoD, designed our new home and planned this trip of a lifetime! The best way for us to get to Alaska is in a 30 foot RV since 3 of our family members have 4 paws! Our soft coated wheaten terriers (Pushinka, Molly and Bubis) are important members of our family so their comfort and safety are critical - plus, they outnumber us so we have to be mindful of their preferences! Jim, will serve as driver, comic relief and narrator. I, Denise, will be the navigator, blogger and photographer. Departure is scheduled for 29 July with arrival planned for 1 September. We will take in as many sites as we can along our route. Our route is Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio on our first day trying to get past Chicago by day two. We'll enter Wisconsin, go thru Minnesota, South Dakota, into Wyoming then into Montana over several days. Then it's into Canada and along the Alaskan Highway into our new home state. We'll enter Alaska near Tok then make our way through the state to Anchorage where we'll camp until our rental property is available on 1 Sep. Then it's on to Homer to observe the construction of our home! Our adventure will include the antics of 3 wild wheatens, 2 barely functional adults, and 1 ultimate road trip - we hope you follow along as we cross our spectacular country, leave the Lower 48 and enter The Last Frontier!
