North of Pentwater, Ludington, Michigan was our next stop. It is a beautiful community on the shores of Lake Michigan. Ludington's claim to fame is its role as the eastern port for the historic car/train ferry across Lake Michigan to Manitowic, Wisconsin. Once, two ferries plied the route across Lake Michigan. Now, one, the S.S. Spartan is permanently docked at Ludington, and only the S.S. Badger operates (https://www.ssbadger.com/). The Badger is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
From Ludington we headed north spending the night at Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore (http://www.nps.gov/slbe/index.htm).
