As part of our desired spontaneity on our North to Alaska expedition, we had no planned route from Clayton, NY west and north. After spending the night at a rest stop on the Ohio Turnpike west of Toledo, we decided to turn north immediately to avoid getting anywhere near Chicago. We chose a route along the western shore of Michigan.
Our first stop was in Pentwater, Michigan, a small community that includes Mears State Park. It is well known by sailors on Lake Michigan as being a excellent harbor precisely one day's sail north from Chicago. We stopped at one of my old haunts, the not-to-be-missed Antler Bar in "downtown" Pentwater. Since I first visited there more than 20 years ago, it has not changed much--the same worn furniture greeted us on entry.
