I have always wanted to drive the Alcan Highway.
Click on the points on the map to see what we did at each location.
Farewell dinner @ Outback Steakhouse.
Whose idea was it to leave on July 4th weekend?
1 hour and 20 minutes from Brownstown to Novi. I can't wait to get away from the crowds.
Day 1, 190 miles to Spring Lake. It's always fun to see Emily, James and the kiddos.
275 miles to Wisconsin today. Not the greatest campground, but it will do.
NOTE: CONTRARY TO WHAT THE ROUTE MAP SHOWS, I DID NT DRIVE ACROSS LAKE MICHIGAN!
A great visit with old friends.
Really nice little campground.
Horicon, the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the U.S. 33,000 acres. I saw cranes, pelicans, heron, geese, deer, and numerous smaller birds.
Drove 345 miles today from Horicon.
Very interesting cruise around the Apostle Islands.
I stopped here just to take the picture. The drive on Highway 13 along Lake Superior is pretty nice.
Saw this along U.S. Highway 2 about 30 miles east of Bemidji. On an additional note, I went through 4 or 5 Indian reservations from Bayfield to Bemidji. Each one had a casino.
I had to go to downtown Bemidji just to visit the tourist center to se these famous statues.
The Headwaters of the Mississippi River. I couldn't pass that by without stopping.
Yesterday there were just Indian Reservations and Casinos. Today there are mostly wide-open spaces and fields; and occasionally tiny towns and grain elevators. (Also. who knew Michigan was in North Dakota?)
I had to figure out what the huge yellow fields were.
I had to stop for a picture at this important rock pile.
I Decided to lay over a day to regroup. The Oil Boom is now the Oil Bust and Williston definitely shows the impact.
