Valley of Ten Thousand SmokesAlaska offers a multitude of leg-stretching sights and activities for visitors at the terminus of their road trip north. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is a historic landmark in the Southwest region of the state that gives visitors a glimpse into the fascinating geologic history of Katmai National Park and Preserve. The attraction celebrates 100 years this June and is an excellent side trip from Anchorage, Kodiak or Homer in Alaska's Southcentral region.

ALBERTA - CALGARY STAMPEDE

Country Western fans traveling north to Alaska this summer would be remiss to bypass what is referred to as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," the Calgary Stampede. The world-renowned, 10-day festival showcases Alberta's unique Western heritage and will celebrate its monumental 100th year of boot-slapping fun this July.

YUKON - OVERLAND TRAIL

Once upon a time, the quickest way to travel between the communities of Whitehorse and Dawson City, Yukon, was by boat along the Yukon River in the summer, or dog sled, horse team or snowshoe in the winter. Today travelers are able to enjoy a scenic 6-hour drive along the Klondike Highway, but for a brief period in the early 20th century, travelers between the two cities braved one of Yukon's earliest roadways, the Overland Trail.

Alaska HighwayTake a trip through time on your road trip north this summer - the famous Alaska Highway celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2012 and offers visitors the chance to traverse a piece of American and Canadian history. Most Alaska-bound road trips intersect with the Alaska Highway at one point or another, but the Alberta to Alaska Highway Route offers the most of the historic roadway from start to finish.

Our summer promotion featuring the experiences of six groups of travelers headed to Alaska is complete, and their comprehensive maps, notes, photos, videos and observations are available on the North to Alaska website. We received 140 entries for this first-ever promotion and are excited to share this array of first-hand observations with other travelers. Each team received a $250 gas card to use on the trip, and North to Alaska will be repeating the promotion for the summer of 2012.
