The reason for this trip

We wanted to ensure that our children were able to see a glacier close -up before all the "accessible" ones melted. Our hike to the edge of Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjord National Park to accomplish this was bittersweet. We were most glad that we were able to bring our kids to a glacier, because what we saw only reinforced the importance of our trip: The glaciers are rapidly melting due to the climate change. There was a stop on the trail with signage indicating where the edge of the glacier had been the year we were married (1998). In this picture of that sign, you can see how much has melted in the last 16 years.
