What a great stop! Driving along the Glenn Highway we could see the Matanuska Glacier off to the right, and saw a sign that said “Glacier View Park.” We drove down a very steep road, across a scary wooden bridge and got to the office. After paying ($15 for camping and $15 per person to walk on the glacier), he sent us out a gravel road and up a minor cliff to a gorgeous dirt lot, all to ourselves, overlooking the glacier. What a view!
The hike on the glacier was awesome, too - the vivid aqua blue color reflected from the cracks, the crevasses, some filled with roaring water, the water rushing into the lake below the glacier. What a great experience, except, perhaps, for the walk back along the base, where John found out that what looked like solid ground wasn’t always. After a lower limb mud bath, we continued on and found the sign that said don’t walk on the glacier unless you are (or are with) an experienced guide.
