Before crossing the Strait of Mackinaw,, on what was once the longest suspension bridge in the world, into Michigan's Upper Peninsula and heading west, it is obligatory to stop in Mackinaw City and take the ferry to Mackinac Island, home to the indescribably famous Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac.
One of the greatest hotels in the world, The Grand (www.grandhotel.com) was the setting for the movie, "Somewhere in Time." It is a seasonal hotel, opening in May and closing in October.
Mackinac Island is car-less. Bicycles and horse carriages are the only form of transportation for residents and visitors. One of the signature sights was watching a UPS worker in the brown uniform walking behind a drayage wagon, pulled by two horses, delivering packages.
